Who is a candidate?
Breasts can lose volume and shape after weight loss, childbirth or as a result of aging. Some women have naturally smaller breasts as a result of their genetics. Breast augmentation can successfully and safely enhance both the size and shape of the breasts. In some cases, a breast lift can be done in combination with augmentation to give the best possible appearance.
How is breast augmentation performed?
Cohesive gel implants are primarily used for breast augmentation although water –based saline implants are also available. Small incisions are placed in the fold beneath the breast or around the nipple. The implants are then inserted beneath the pectoral muscle or, in some cases, beneath the breast tissue itself.
The surgery is performed under a local anesthetic, and you will be able to go home immediately after surgery; an overnight stay is not required. The surgery takes approximately 1 to 2 hours.
What is the recovery period like?
Swelling and discomfort after surgery are normal for a few days. Dr. Alvarez will prescribe pain medication for you, as well as antibiotics to minimize the chances of infection. You will be able to shower within a day or two. The stitches are hidden below the surface of the skin and will be absorbed by the body.
Depending on your type of work, you may return within less than two weeks of surgery. Although the skin will be healed within a week or so, it will be three or four weeks until full activities can be resumed (i.e., sports or heavy lifting).
What are the risks?
All surgery carries certain risks and breast augmentation is no exception. These include bleeding, infection, changes in nipple sensation, and “contracture” or scarring around the implant. Fortunately, most of these complications are rare. Dr. Alvarez will review all the risks of breast augmentation with you in detail during your cosmetic consultation.
